Our cookie policy

Updated: 08/03/2018

§1 Why read this?

When you’re insured with us, you know exactly how much you’re paying per mile, and how many miles you’ve driven each month. It’s completely upfront – which is just the way we like it.

Cookies, by their nature, are a little different. Designed to improve your online experience without being noticed, they work in the background. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be aware of them. This policy is designed to tell you all you need to know about the way we use cookies.

§2 What words mean

This Cookie Policy describes how By Miles (“we”, “us”, “our” and “By Miles”) collects, stores and uses information about you in connection with By Miles insurance products and services, including your use of the By Miles websites (the “Sites”) and the By Miles mobile application (the “App”).

Our Sites and our App use cookies to distinguish you from other users. Cookies are small text files that are downloaded to your computer or mobile device when you access a website or mobile application. They’re used to distinguish you from other users, collect information, track visitor use and to provide you with a good experience.

For further general information about cookies please visit www.aboutcookies.org or www.allaboutcookies.org.

Our software will issue cookies to your system when you access and use the Site and App and you will be asked to consent to this at the time (e.g. when you first visit our website).

A cookie cannot read data off your system or cookie files created by other sites. You can set your system not to accept cookies if you wish (for example, by changing your browser settings so cookies are not accepted). However, some of our features may not function if you remove cookies from your system.

§4 Pixel Tags

As well as cookies, we may use pixel tags (which are also known as web beacons and clear GIFs) to track your actions on our site. Unlike cookies, which are stored on the hard drive of your computer or mobile device by a website, pixel tags are embedded invisibly on webpages.

Pixel tags measure the success of our marketing campaigns, compile statistics about how our site is used, and help us to manage our content.

We use two main types of cookie:

  • Session cookies: These only exist while your browser is open. When you shut it, they are automatically deleted.
  • Permanent cookies: These stay around even once you’ve shut your browser. They help us recognise you when you return to our site.

Some of these cookies are served to your computer or device by us, and some by third party service providers that use.

Cookie categoryPurpose
Essential CookiesThese cookies are necessary to provide you with many of our site’s services and features. Without them, important parts of the site (such as the transactional pages and secure account logins) wouldn’t work.
Analytics CookiesThese cookies are used to collect information about how visitors use our site.
This data is aggregated, meaning none of it identifies the users it relates to. It helps us understand things like how many people are visiting the site and how they reached us.
Functionality CookiesThese cookies allow our site to remember choices you make (like your user name, your region and any customisations you’ve made to elements such as text size or font).
They may also be needed to enable functions such as videos or blog comments. The information these cookies collect may be anonymised and they cannot track your browsing activity across other websites.
Marketing CookiesThe ads our Sites use are provided by third parties such as Google. They use cookies to tailor the ads they show you to your online behaviour.
You can set preferences for how Google advertises to you using the Google Ads Settings.
Social Media CookiesParts of our site are linked to social media platforms. These platforms use cookies to record when you use features such as the ‘like’ and ‘share’ buttons, or when you engage with our content via social media.
This information may be used to help select which ads you see when using those platforms.

§7 That’s the way the cookie crumbles…

A cookie cannot read data off your system or cookie files created by other sites but a service provider can use the same cookie to recognise your computer or device across different sites.

You can set your system not to accept cookies if you wish (for example, by changing your browser settings so cookies are not accepted). However if you do, some of our features may not function.

While we always do our best to protect our users, we cannot guarantee that the Sites and App are free from viruses, or anything else which may have a harmful effect on any device.
